WiiDraw: Another game in development

Introduction

This post/article is to talk you about WiiDraw. WiiDraw isn't the definitive name and I plan to change it when I think of a better one.

This game is intended to be a clon/port of Crayon Physics game based on Crayon Physics, featuring drawing shapes, lines, joints and scrolling. At this moment joints haven't been added but it is still work in progress.

This time the video isn't made by me because as you may have seen from my previous posts my camera sucks, that's why bernadmatthew is the one that is going to bring you The video.

The video

New Video (Update)
(I know this video is from 2 weeks ago but I haven't had time to update my blog)

Current Progress

The only thing I have added since the version shown in the video is some shape optimizations. So, the current progress is what you can see in the video.
There is a lot of new progress but I won't show anything for a while, the reason, WiiDraw is joining the Wii Coding Competition.

Features

  • You draw and other stuff

Limitations

I'm trying to optimize everything at maximum but still I have seen some lag in the game when I draw over 50 shapes, well the game isn't intended to handle that much shapes at a time, but I don't want it to be my fault if the game lags for you.

Ideas

I'm open to new ideas, and that's the main reason of this post, to make you aware of what I'm doing and if you want you may help me on the direction of this game in case you see it is going bad.

Thanks for reading!

@bernadmatthew:
Thanks, and I hope the same

@Rene:
WiiDraw is just a temporary name, a "code name" if you like, I will change it when I have a better idea.

@beardface:
Just draw everything with an offset, and make your world bigger than the screen. If you need any help or anything just send me an email

Another cool looking game… How did you go about adding scrolling? I’d like to add scrollable/zoomable levels to wii physics next.

I think its time for you to register the name WiiDraw

i hope that the progress continues and that the game does in fact become a puzzle game, looking foward to it, good luck with the drawings.lol

@bernadmatthew
There is a lot of new progress, overall here are some improvements:

06/08/08
- Added distance joint
- Vacations

04/08/08
- Added selection feedback
- Modified joint making
- General code cleaning

03/08/08
- Added dragging

02/08/08
- Added map "engine"

01/08/08
- General semi-refactoring
- Added switching between locked and free scrolling

31/07/08
- Added locked scrolling (relative to character)

I got a tablet and I’m going to use it to make all graphic art involved on the game :) (yes I like designing/drawing in addition to programming)

@Sir_Voe
At this moment the game is in the stage of "proof of concept", all that you see is just part of the "engine". What I really intend for this game is to be a puzzle game, just as you mentioned it will be a set of challenges that you need to pass before going to the next level, I have a lot of ideas in mind, and what is left is just making some level art, level puzzles, and removing some bugs the game has. I think all the work involved is going to take about ~2 months from now.

Nice work. I can imagine as it is it could be fun for 2 players, 1 building obstacles with the Wiimote while the other attempts to pass them using the nunchuck.
A challenge mode could be cool too, having preset stages where the player has to reach a goal with only a small amount of ink to work with. That’s pretty similar to Crayon Physics though.

i have now published another video for you, hope you enjoy, by the way, i am still having fun with this, i hope you make great progress, sorry for the delay

@jobbon:
The goal isn’t defined very well.. the idea is to be a puzzle game, using a character which you move with the nunchuck and you have to get to some point.. the problem and what isn’t exactly defined is what kind of puzzle could be added.. originally I wanted to be like Crayon physics, a ball and stars… but that’s just copying a game that you can play on your computer, so I wanted to take advantage of the nunchuk and wiimote.. and because you have both,you can for example with the wiimote control the drawing of shapes, and with the nunchuck you control a character.

————————

I completely forgot to make a changelog, but here is some things I have added since the version shown in the video (from latest to earlier):

- Added Loading splash.
- Added character movement.
- Added character.
- Added nunchuk support.
- Added algorithm to detect circles.
- Added pause.
- Added Revolute joints.
- Added not-closed shapes. (aka "lines")
- Added some optimizations on vertices (removes unneeded ones).
- Added static shapes
- Added background (chalkboard)

what is the goal of this game if there is no one then here is a little idea make a ball wich you have to move with shapes in to a hole

The last version has a lot of new features, some graphic improvements and a lot of bugs :D, it crashes a lot also....

working on solving that before the next video
